The ego is quite happy indeed that it is given the name I, that it is seen to be in charge, that is is seen to act.
Yet, when you meet the real self and turn to the ego, it whimpers, game up and disappears.
Don't let it pretend to run the show, ask who it is.

ego is also like a cockroach. shine the light of 'who are you' on it and it scurries away...as you say, 'game up'.
the nicest illusion but you're clinging to a lifeline all that time.
